Making People Fast
I started aero testing about 12 years ago, mainly to help my own time trial ambitions. It worked, I got a lot faster!!
Transferring those skills into helping others get faster was great, but it always had to be live and at a velodrome...so my ability to help people was limited.
I Love Making People FASTER!!
This year has been a game changer. Starting to work with Airo.app software meant that I could not only help people locally, or people that could travel to the velodrome...but I can help people remotely.
For the first few months I didn't take on remote clients as I was learning to use the system, and there was a learning curve. But then with some pro riders, I had to do it remotely, due to travel...after some refining of the system, we are now able to offer a fully remote aero testing service.
How Remote Aero Testing Works
We start with a phonecall or via video call and we can meet and I can begin to understand your history in the sport, your equipment and your goals. I also get to explain my process and together we can plan the steps to make you faster.
5 Simple Steps:
- I send you the starter pack
- You fill in the details and take the 4 photo's needed
- I use the photo's to make the 3D digital digital mesh of you, and match the 3D mesh to your exact position on the bike.
- I use my experience and iterative testing using the CFD to optimize your position
- We use videos on the home trainer, or a video call to test the options and find the optimum position of you.
Step 1 - Getting Started
The starter pack includes everything you need to know for the whole process and how to get the most out of your aero testing.
It guides you through all the things I need to know, including your bike measurements and how to do it easily. A simple guide to help me understand what adjustments are possible on your bike.
Step 2 - Photo's
Once you've filled in the details, measured your bike and taken the 4 required photos, you can just send the files back to me and I can get to work making you faster!!
We need:
- Two photo's in standing
- Two photo's in position on the bike
Step 3 - Finding a Baseline
Once I have the photo's, I use the two off bike photo's to create the 3D digital mesh. And then once we have a digital version of you, I can take that mannequin from the basic position and match it exactly to your position on the bike. We can also add the helmet you use to get an accurate baseline.
Basic Position
Your Position
Step 4 - Optimizing Your Position
With careful adjustment of the position we can move the 3D mesh into new test positions and run the CFD, we can search for the speed with your body shape and limits of what you bike can adjust to. The software will tell us the CdA of each position and we will start to see a pattern of what makes you fast.
The amazing thing about the software, is that we can also test different helmets through the process and find the optimum combination of position and helmet. Below I was mainly trying some different reach options with the Ekoi Pure Aero helmet. Then I tried the HJC Adwatt, which I had used in the past and had been fast on me...then when the Airo App, updated with the new ABUS TT helmet, I tried that...as you can see there are small gains to be had by making the smart choices...you can't guess these things, you have to test...We can test for you!!
Step 5 - Analysis and Testing
Once I've completed the CFD simulations and found the options that I think will work best. I write a report to outline the options display the data and outline the best options for testing the new positions.
You can then make the changes to the bike and test them, and either send me a new set of video's and photo's or a video call to assess the comfort and power elements of the fit.
Be Faster in the Real World
A big thing for me is that the speed we find in CFD transfers to the real world. When I first started using the Airo App I was very keen to make sure the gains transferred...but it wasn't long before the PR's and race wins started rolling in. And some clients that did both CFD and velodrome testing showed that the CFD gains were transferring to the real world.
Summary
Aero testing is now accessible for everyone. The process we have developed with the Airo App means that it doesn't matter where you are in the world, we can help make you faster!!
So far we have made people faster in several different European countries, the Middle East...and the furthest so far is Australia.
